A friend of mine is closing a DVD rental store. All the DVD's are for sale. He has a total collection of 2400 DVDs out of which 1600 are Region 1 (USA English movies and international movies) and 600 are Region 5 (with 200 Hindi movies). Rest 200 are either All Region or DVD 9. Those who are interested in buying the whole collection, just send in an email to business.carter@gmail.com

Hey,

The recent focus on the home video market in India - its sheer size and potential, consuming middle class numbers and plumetting hardware prices definitely warrants the attention of the more organised, bigger boys. Enter Reliance, Nimbus and the like...

But what's interesting is the evolution of the rental industry. Heres a brief rewind - In 2004 www.clixflix.com was launched with an online model - India's First Online DVD rental co. A good 2 years later, in Feb 2006 or thereabouts catchflix and seventymm follow suit. Thereafter it become a free for all with another 5 or 6 entrants.

In the meantime, Clixflix undestands the market, re-aligns and launches more brick and mortar avenues (retail boom a probable cause), launches a "Dial a Movie Service" and throws in the convenience of a 'mobile' application. Thats integration, increasing the value proposition, better mix and CUSTOMER CONVENIENCE most importantly - apart from data mining customer preferences, tastes and viewing patterns in lieu of the larger and more varied cutomer acquisition models.

So now the big boys arrive - plush with funds.. They cut short their learning curve, reduce their possible magnified mistakes (in lieu of large rollouts) by snapping up the early movers of the industry.. The online VC funded shee shee guys struggle to prove a point - online CAN work, while the rest of us want our movies faster and are not ineterested in VC scalability which perhaps can look no further than their nose at the BIGGER picture - India is dying for ORIGINAL content first...

I recently became a member of Madhouse in Delhi and have got hooked on to this new service called DVD Rentals. These guys have not only brought netflix like model to India but refined it too by delivering & collecting movie disks to my home.

Recently I have started receiving free popcorn sachets with every movie that I order to Madhouse. This seems to be a great deal- I watch my choice of movies at home in a cost roughly 1/10th of what I spend in going to a multiplex(movie tickets+petrol+parking+snacks etc) and get a complete movie hall experience along with the popcorns that accompany my movie disk.

Guys would like to give up a High five !.Keep it rolling-Madhouse;Play with us

Sarsij - I totally agree what you are saying. If you are looking for a movie that you know you will get at the local DVD store - you will probably not get it from these companies. Inventory is where they expect to beat the local shops. For example - if you are looking to see all episodes of 'Friends' from Season 2 - the local shop will not help.

Come to think of it - it's another example of 'Long Tail' where these companies will flourish on the fact that the combined demand for the not-so-popular stuff is a lot more than demand for the top 100 movies (let's say). I think that the bigger challenge is the IPTV and the movie-on-demand portals - in the next few years.

As far as my experience goes........such companies are giving the same service [service expected by Indian customers] at an unreasonable price [it sounds unreasonable because of the prevalent piracy], so I have a serious doubts over the success of such a concept until the piracy exists in India.

A little price comparison would do justice to what I have written in above lines............SeventyMM approached me with this idea some time back......and they were asking for approximately 450/- for four movies...........and if I pay 900/- each month I can get unlimited number of movies. [No one can watch more than 4-5 movies on average in a month], so unlimited offer is just to attract people but it has no real meaning. [Or it could just give me a thought that I will start a side business of distributing CDs to people close to me].

The price asked for a DVD [which will have 3-4 movies] is just rs 25/- for 2-3 days........and his collection is pretty reasonable w.r.t. to my taste.

Does SeventyMM realize that their deal makes no sense as long as India keeps enjoying pirated stuff.
