Tek Friday Topic – Search Engines

May 22, 2005

One thing that we have started in our company and is very well received is the Tek (Tech) Friday forum. We have had some interesting discussions in the last few weeks but here is something that surprised me:

Number of searches per day from various search engines (more…), ranked on popularity (few names are new to me):

Google – 250 million
Overture – 167 million
Inktomi – 80 million
Looksmart – 45 million
FindWhat – 33 million
AskJeeves – 20 million
Altavista – 18 million
FAST – 12 million

Another fact that came up was – that Google doesn’t use meta keywords for indexing. Now that saw some interesting arguments and counter arguments with almost everybody participating in the discussion. I have to say that I was excited about the passion and energy with which everybody was trying to put up their points. We did spend more than allotted time for the discussion but, boy, I must say I loved it :-)

Exactly the kind of environment I would like to see in the company.
