Open-source companies revenue model
May 22, 2005
Since we are doing a lot of open-source projects, quite a few people ask me – what is the revenue model? I came across a couple of articles that will be of interest to anybody with these queries:
- Open-source companies chase steady money – Services around the product rather than the product itself is the key
- Investors to commercialize open source – SimulaLabs will finance 6-8 open source startups with $10-15 million it got from venture capitalists
I just wonder – what is the primary focus of all these organizations – ‘process innovation’ or ‘product innovation’?

I’d imagine that the companies are focussing on both product and process innovations, but the money I think is going to come from process innovations, specifically, support & maintenance of open source software
